I Nominate YOU
A key issue when conducting a developmental assessment center is determining who will have the opportunity to attend. If the organization is small (and the budget money is available), the answer is usually "Everybody." When that is not the case some method of nominating people to attend the AC must be used. Which begs the question, who will get the most out of the experience? Here are a few things to consider:
- It may be counterintuitive, but your best performers are more likely to use the feedback than your poorer performers. Use the developmental AC as an opportunity make your good people better.
- If your organization is spread out geographically or operates in silos, consider nominating people who may not have the opportunity to be in the limelight of headquarters or the department that gets the most funding. Your best talent might not be where you think it is.
- Consult your succession plan. If there are people you have already targeted to be in line for key promotions, the AC process will give you and them an idea of what skills they still may need to posses before making the next step. This will also show people that you succession plan is an actionable process and not just a box that has been checked off.

In Search of Inspiration
I don’t know about you, but some days I need an extra boost to get moving. Whether it’s dealing with a performance problem, finishing a high profile report, or talking to your child’s teacher, tasks can seem rather daunting at times. Ultimately, each of us is responsible for motivating ourselves (and our staff) to take action in order to achieve our goals.
I use quotes to inspire me and help me put things in perspective. In fact, I have compiled some of my favorites into a book – The Exceptional Manager – Words of Wisdom. Click here for a sample. If you’d like to get some inspiration so you can achieve extraordinary results, click here.
If you have comments, stories, or quotes to share please contact Kammy Haynes. You’ll be hearing more about The Exceptional Manager book series in upcoming newsletters.
